Integrated Strategies for Whole Person Fitness, Episode 3

by Chip Richards |  Date Released : 15 Jul 2011

In this episode of the Integrated Strategies series, we continue our exploration of the “Congruence Wheel” (the balanced partnership between our physical, mental and emotional bodies) and how this sense of internal alignment greatly enhances our external efforts and results with clients and athletes of all levels. Episode 3 is about our Emotional Body – the creative engine of our mental visions and intentions. In this episode we introduce the concept of heart intelligence and discover that the heart has an electromagnetic field far greater than that of our linear thinking mind. Following the last episode’s exploration of the mind and the idea that the conscious thoughts we hold and plant into our subconscious are like the seeds we plant into a rich garden bed, this month we consider the emotional body as the “water” that activates those thought-seeds into dynamic growing actions and experiences in our reality. During our exploration, we discuss two primary principles with regards to our emotional body:

  1. Every external goal (in fitness, sport and life) is driven by an internal need or emotional outcome. From winning an Olympic medal to a losing a few pounds, whatever we are seeking on the outside is almost always a symbol of a deeper emotional need that we are seeking to satisfy within.
  2. Holding our emotions at ransom holds our external results at ransom. If we refuse to allow ourselves to feel a certain way until we achieve our external aim, we inadvertently postpone, delay and block ourselves from receiving the very result that we are seeking.

This lesson is an invitation to begin recognizing our emotional body not just as a reactive force to what’s happening around us, but as a pro-active energy capable of greatly influencing our external results…In fact, by embracing the creative power of our emotions and discovering ways to experience our EMOTIONAL OUTCOME in advance of our EXTERNAL ACHIEVEMENT, two things happen:

  1. Autonomous Internal Fulfillment - We no longer depend upon the external result to satisfy the underlying feeling we are seeking. We discover we can create the emotional outcome of we are seeking (peace, happiness, contentment and connectedness) no matter what’s going on around us.
  2. Natural External Achievement - As soon as we begin pro-actively cultivating that end result FEELING within (even in small doses), we naturally open wide the doorway to also receiving the external result – in ways that are often faster and far more sustainable than previously imagined.

When I first discovered this concept as an athlete, it quite literally transformed my whole world. Instantly, I began feeling dramatically better about myself and everything I was doing, and very shortly thereafter I began getting the top finishing results that had thus far been eluding me. This one simple shift (making my emotional fulfillment the “pathway to” not the “end result of” my high achievement) has profoundly ignited the work I do with world-class athletes, CEOs and young people alike ever since.

So take some time to become aware of your emotional outcomes and how you currently feel with regards to different aspects of your life and the lives of your clients.

How do your emotions work with (or against) your goals and actions on the gym and in the world?

What it is the ultimate feeling outcome of your current goal?

How might you begin to experience more of that feeling now?

Stay tuned for an in-depth look at the HOW in Episode 4!
