As an elite level athlete whose Olympic dream was painfully interrupted through a series of unexpected physical injuries, I have spent much of the past 20 years exploring the expanded realms of human potential, and helping humans of all walks of life reach high aims without destroying themselves along the way.
While coaching Olympic athletes, I came to recognize an inner pattern for peak performance, which has evolved into a dynamic model for transformative change – positioning the physical body as one spoke of a multi-dimensional wheel of truly holistic wellness, performance and vitality.
In this 8-part video series, we’ll take a close look at what I call the "Congruence Wheel" and how the different aspects of our body, mind, heart and energy work together (or don’t!) to create (or block!) us from achieving the results we are seeking.
We’ll explore different practical tools for assisting our clients and athletes to make genuinely integrated and lasting shifts — from the inside out.
After watching Episode 1, I invite you to explore the following simple inquiry to help you begin to get a sense of your own level of congruence in a couple of key areas of your life.
Episode 1: Congruence Inquiry
Consider the different aspects of your reality — your relationships, your physical vitality, your creative work, your finances, etc...
1. Pick an area of your life you feel truly great about. Some aspect of your life, work or relationships in which you currently experience or express a certain level of mastery. Allow yourself to connect with this area of your life and imagine the way you experience it. Then consider the following (it may help to write your answers)…
What are your most common THOUGHTS in relation to this area of your life?
What BELIEFS do you have about yourself, your capabilities, and what is possible in this area of your life?
How do you normally FOCUS your mind in this area of your life (toward what you want or what you don’t want?)?
What type of WORDS do you use with yourself and others in relation to this area of your life?
What type ACTIONS do you take on a regular basis with regards to this area of your life?
What is the overall FEELING of this area of your life EMOTIONALLY. What do you feel when you are immersed in this area of life?
2. Now consider an area of your life that you feel needs to change. An area of desired shift or transformation... and take a few minutes to consider the same questions above (again, write your answers).
Notice the difference in your THOUGHTS/BELIEFS/WORDS/ACTIONS/FEELINGS and the coinciding "reality" of this area of your life compared to the area that you currently feel great about. How different are your moment-to-moment thoughts? How different do you feel on the inside about these two aspects? How different do they each express themselves outside in your life?
As you begin to gain a general awareness of your own levels of congruence – or inner alignment – in different aspects of your life, you will begin to naturally notice these aspects in your clients as well, with regard to their approach to various fitness and sporting goals.
