Hey Jonathan - thank you for the question. This exercise in some fashion can be used for any client. Anyone who can walk can do this exercise as it is very similar to a gait pattern. Once you know the client's goal, their preferred style of training (what types of equipment they like to use, etc.), level of ability and motivation behind his/her goal - the response you want to get from this exercise will be achieved by manipulating the acute variables - how much weight used, speed of motion, volume, etc.
When you use the concept of Triangulation (See video on Triangulation) you'll see that any movement (exercise) can be modified to fit a client's ability by shrinking (or expanding) one of the 3 components of movement: 1- Direction - you can changed the direction of the motion, so instead of moving with rotation, you may choose to move more in the sagittal plane of frontal plane. 2- Height - you can alter the vertical height of the motion, so you can change how high the arm moves when you 'curl' - you can come all the way up to the head or stay down by the hip (this will depend on the client's preferred style of training and equipment used) 3- Distance - you can change the horizontal distance OR range of motion, so shrink or expand how far into rotation the client moves.
