Reactive Variability Training with Core-Tex

Giovanni Roselli | 03 Sep 2019

Whenever asked to try a new piece of equipment, three good questions to ask are:
“Is this product unique?”
“Can I perform drills with this that I cannot with other pieces of equipment?”
“What are the potential benefits to my clients and myself?

When it comes to the Core-Tex, the answers are all a resounding yes. I was first introduced to Core-Tex back in 2011 by its founder Anthony Carey and then became a Core-Tex Master Trainer in 2016. It has been a staple in my programs for both my clients and myself ever since.

What Is Core-Tex

At first glance, one looks at the Core-Tex as a balance trainer – but this is not its primary purpose. It is a reactive, neuromuscular training tool. Balance is an important part of neuromuscular reaction, but not the only part.

Furthermore, it is not to be looked at as a piece of equipment. It is to be looked at as an environment; an environment that constantly changes due to its unrestricted spherical rotation. It is the only device on the market that allows for movement in all three planes of motion and whose base translates at the same time. Given its ability to tilt, translate, and rotate all at the same time, it once again shows uniqueness since there is nothing else on the market that can provide these combination of movements simultaneously.

Pushup Variations With Core-Tex:

Its patented design is made up of the following components:

  • Base
  • Inner Ring of Base
  • Platform
  • Central Bumper
  • Ball Transfers
  • Ball Transfer Sockets
  • Handrails
  • Handrail Socket

Why Core-Tex?

The Core-Tex promotes reactive variability and encourages dynamic stability and balance through reactive mechanisms within the proprioceptive system. Nearly all other unstable devices on the market strive for improved static stabilization on the liable surface. The Core-Tex actually encourages movement and change of direction.

Because there is no central axis in which the Core-Tex contacts, rotation is unrestricted. The Core-Tex can rotate 360 degrees in either direction. Additionally, if the center of gravity of any weight, body or body part placed on the platform is not directly centered, the platform will move. The body senses the unpredictability of the surface and increases muscular cocontractions for stabilization.

So, What’s In It For You?

Variability – Core-Tex exercises dissipate stress on the joints and tissue, challenging the nervous system in novel ways. Due to its dynamic nature, each and every repetition will change the joint angle and muscular recruitment. For example, doing an exercise while standing on the Core-Tex will create a weight shift and therefore motion of the Core-Tex platform. As the base tilts, translates, and rotates, the following occurs:

  • The lower extremities react
  • Hip and pelvis respond to keep the center of gravity over the base of support
  • The thoracic spine laterally flexes and rotates
  • The shoulder girdle position then changes

A sequence of events as those described would make each and every repetition distinctly different. It is important to note that the loads lifted this way will not be as much as ground-based, but the muscular recruitment will be much more varied. This unpredictability creates need for greater muscle activation.

Improved Response Time – Our motor system will learn to execute motor response faster to meet the needs of the environment. It only takes 70-90 milliseconds before injury to ligaments or adjacent soft tissue to occur. That means in the time range of 40-80 milliseconds, a muscular contraction must be under way to actively stabilize an area and prevent injury.

Functional Mobility & Dynamic Stability – You create situations to give the body the ability to lengthen and load the tissue in multiple vectors from one position using the motion of the platform. Additionally, stability demands are by default more dynamic and therefore more functional due to the patented motion of Core-Tex.

Just like any good system, Core-Tex has its basic and fundamental movements.

From there, you can start to get creative.

Watch how you can combine the Core-Tex with other pieces of equipment like the Queenax Functional System:

Give It A Go

The Core-Tex is designed to be used throughout its various applications to improve stability, strength, proprioception, balance, range of motion, neuromuscular control, flexibility, and kinesthetic awareness. It can also be programmed to stress the cardiovascular system for metabolic demands.

Going back to my initial questions: is this product unique and can I perform drills that I cannot with other pieces of equipment? Absolutely. What are the benefits? They make sense and are backed my science.

If you are a big fan of movement like myself, this one is right down your alley.

I'd like to thank Gio for doing an amazing job of communicating the value and science behind Core-Tex. A great job of bringing the perspective that any critical thinking trainer/coach would bring to the use of a new tool.
