I have a client that just finished a cycle of steroids and is experiencing a serious loss of energy and drastically reduced sex drive. He was on a 12-week pyramiding cycle, injecting 3cc of both testosterone and deca. He's been told that he may have 3 to 6 months to fully recover from the cycle in regard to his own body producing an adequate level of testosterone.
Is he correct about the 3 to 6 month time frame?
He's not motivated to come to the gym at all. Is there something that his Doc can give him to jump-start his body's normal testosterone production?
I think the old saying is, “It isn’t nice to fool with Mother Nature”. Anabolic steroids are essentially synthetic testosterone. Testosterone is manufactured in the male human body by the testes. When testosterone levels are dramatically elevated (as they are with steroid use) it is no longer necessary for the testicles to produce it. The next saying that fits is “If you don’t use it, you lose it”. With nothing to do, the testicles close shop and shrinkage may occur (of the testicles, not the other part). The problem for your friend is, when the steroids stop, there is a lag time until the twins get back to work. The amount of time this takes depends upon what was used and how long one used it. For the scenario you gave, 3-6 months sounds about right. Your friend can check with his doctor to see if there is anything that can be done and to rule out any possible physiological problems. If all is well, your friend may benefit form prohormone supplementation. Tribulus-terrestris and Andro may provide a benefit by supplying the materials and the signal for the body to up testosterone production.
Tribulis is thought to act upon the pituitary gland, increasing the release of Leutinizing Hormone (LH). LH provides the signal for testosterone production. This is where andro comes into play. Androstenedione and diol are one metabolic conversion from testosterone. The hope is that with LH increased and the raw materials to make testosterone (andro) available, the body will get to work cooking up more testosterone. Additionally, an anti-aromatase is often used, such as chrysin or methoxyisoflavone to prevent any of this precious testosterone from being converted to estrogen. Creatine supplementation may also offer the benefits of increased size and strength.
What your friend needs to do is ensure that apathy does not take over. Withdrawal from steroids can be quite difficult. There are many studies showing a pattern of use and abuse that mirrors other addictive substances. It is not uncommon for heavy, frequent users to be so distraught from withdrawal that they jump back on. Encourage your friend to stick it out; things will get back to normal eventually. Make sure the intensity and volume of the workout is reduced. There is no way your friend will be able to resume the previous level of “enhanced” training.
