I AM GOING TO GO OUT ON A LIMB: Our study of human anatomy and biomechanics is going to change noticeably in the next five years.
Of course, the structures we study will remain the same. While we certainly appreciate structure, function and the constant evolution of form, we can be sure that no evolution of our anatomy and makeup will take place within the next five years. However, our interpretation will change, there is no doubt. What gives me the confidence to state this past the point of conjecture?
Recent studies on the contractile ability of fascia, the dissection of long and continuous muscle chains from head to foot, and new research into human proprioceptors make one truth truly undeniable: that human structure is fully interdependent and multi-faceted. How would our training and programming change if we knew that connective tissue could actively stabilize joints? If muscles did not necessarily have to cross a joint to affect motion? If motions at the knee could directly affect the foot and hip?
These ideas might sound esoteric, but in time they will seem basic. These are only a handful of subjects that are being researched currently, and as conclusions filter down, new protocols, strategies and techniques will be developed in our industry. For those who are curious, geeky and/or incredulous, there are some interesting times that lie ahead.
A word to the wise: keep an open mind, and scrutinize!
