Quad Pain

Hi, i have two clients in my group fitness class that are reasonably new to the active lifestyle... they are experiencing a sharp pain in their Quads starting at their knee and up to their hip area.. I have given them a range of stretches to do, Quad stretch, Hip Flexor and also stretching of the hamstrings and groin. The main pain is associated with running and lunges. Both can squat with minimal pain... Being a new PT this is all a learning curve for me.
Am i doing something wrong for 2 clients to have the same pain? have i instructed them to do the correct stretching?
Thanks in advance.

Exercises for muscular dystophy

Hi there,

I am about to train a client with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy on his right side. He also suffers from mild sciatica. His personal goal is to get in shape for some social hockey games he has coming up. He's in his 50s and for his age his cardio is pretty good and I see no problems in strengthening the relevant muscles in his legs. However I am concerned about the best approach to strengthen his upper body with that imbalance in mind and would be open to any suggestions which are sport specific!

Thanks in advance.

Scleroderma how to help?

Hello,
I have a client with Scleroderma, a condition which causes hardening of connective tissues. People with this rare condition very quickly lose functional RoM (Range of Motion) because it hardens and essentially builds scar tissue all over the body. It also causes the person to fatigue much faster than they normally would.
I am writing this to try and get some advice on how to deal with my client and her limitations. I want to push her to bring up her endurance and of course her RoM, but I don’t want to over tax her and make anything worse. I have done a fair deal of research on the condition and have talked to a medical professional. I have yet to get in contact with a physiotherapist, but I thought that maybe someone here would have some experience in dealing with an individual suffering from Scleroderma that could give me advice as well as others in case they find themselves in the same situation.
Thank you kindly, Ken.

Client wants to run but can't!

This is quite an unusual case... I have a new client who is 42 years old, 5Kilos overweight.

My client is a lovely lady but unfortunately has a facial disfigurement (upper right jaw protrudes slightly but obviously and also her mouth is twists towards the opposite side - slightly). I haven't had the confidence to ask about this as no information was offered, and the client doesn't appear to be worried about it at all; I assume she was born this way.

The reason I mention this is I wonder if it could possibly have something to do with the fact that she is convinced she cannot run - she trips. I have identified that she pronates and so this is being corrected with footwear and bespoke orthotics. I tested my client on the treadmill (at a very slow speed) and when she attempted to run, she tripped _ I stopped the machine immediately and realise that I would need to address this outdoors. She has no confidence at all and joked that she used to wonder whether she has a neurological problem.

I pointed to the top of the gym stairs (approximately 10 metres away) and asked her to imagine a scenario where her son was under immediate threat, and that it was an instant reaction that she got to him as fast as possible – I then asked her what would happen, and she said she would run to him, I asked if she would trip and she said no. Therefore is this some kind of mental block or phobia, or could it be lack of balance, lack of core strength or something to do with her disfigurement?

Double-jointed?

When in plank position, my client's elbows tend to hyperextend outwards beyond the normal range. It seems like she is double-jointed. Should this be corrected and if yes, how?

Speed Shearing Training

Hi, Thank you for your great web site, always lots of info and learning. I am needing assistance, however, with setting a program for a 26yr old male who wishes to train for entry into a 'speed shearing' competition. He is a full time shearer working 8 hr days, 5 days a week, but wishes to improve his strength, endurance and power. He is a lean, 6foot 1 inch, 86 kg. Could you please give me some suggestions for a training program for him. He has access to a gym facility with most equipment. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards - Bridget

Client who has fractured lower 3 vertebrae from snowboarding.

Hi all, I have a client who has fractured her lower 3 vertebrae approximately 3 weeks ago. When this first occurred, she was unable to move without experiencing major pain, and as a result had to be put on medication. 3 weeks after the incident, she is now able to move around (cautiously) & drive to work. She stills experiences pain & also is still on medication. I would like to gain some knowledge as to approximately how long this injury will take to heal, and also if there are any exercises that she could do while still in the recovery process.
